According to Mignette Garvida of Ryerson University, "'Conyo' talk is a cultural identification where its speakers can be described as having a profound cultural ambivalence."
WHAT IS A CONYO
In situations of code switching, people who speak "conyo" do not use it spontaneously. Instead, they use "conyo" intentionally to delimit their own space. Speakers of "conyo" use this strategy intentionally so that people would view them as socially and economically privileged. The speakers clearly create the multiple and complementary identities for themselves by switching between languages (Garvida). Garvida also stated that, "They have created a ‘social community’ taking on the role of stereotype images of Spaniards or Americans that exist in the Philippine popular imagination adding 'local color' to their everyday discourse." Lastly, "conyo" speakers communicate among themselves clearly and directly (Garvida).
